Rationale and History of the program
Historically, the Effective Speaking component of JCI Canada and our Chapters was a well known training session. This had gradually declined but was rejuvenated under the direction of JCI Okanagan Senator, Laura Thurnheer. Laura developed and facilitated an Effective Speaking course available to members and non members annually. Several graduates from Laura’s course went on to compete, AND WIN, at the JCI Area and World level effective speaking competition. Specifically, two World Champions, Joanne Woolley and Rhonda Victoor, both trained under Laura’s program. As a result of these international, and many local successes, the training has become well known in the JCI Canada community. The National Effective Speaking program is based largely on the training program Laura Thurnheer developed, along with contributions from other JCI Canada local effective speaking trainers.
Volunteer Opportunity - Economics for Success (MRU)
April 26, 2010 at 9:00am to 1:56pm on May 5, 2010
ESIS: Economics For Success (ESIS) Grade 9
Mount Royal University
Time Commitment: 8:15 am – 2:30 pm *unless otherwise noted*
ESIS: Economics for Success is an interactive program designed to encourage students to consider and reflect on the advantages of remaining in school until they have acquired the knowledge, attitudes and skills to undertake the longer-term goal of a successful career. Students explore their own strengths and weaknesses and create their own definition of success. The value of lifelong learning is linked to personal success. The costs associated with living on your own are explored with the creation of a budget. The differences between gross and net pay are identified, and critical thinking and problem solving skills are put to the test in the attempt to reduce the costs to live within a realistic budget. Employability skills are identified and the trends in the labor market are discussed. Career planning, role models and goal setting are introduced as valuable tools to assist the attainment of success as defined by the student.
